Audio Systems: car Bose system noise, q45 infiniti, volume control knob

Question
on my '91 Q45 Infiniti Bose system a loud unpleasant popping/static noise occurs frequently which is only corrected by wiggling/diddling with the volume control; it sounds like the speakers will blow if I don't try to get the unit to stop.  Have you heard of such a problem?  Can the volume control knob be replaced to correct the problem?  The only attempts I have made to correct it is to vacuum the unit and spray compressed air in it because someone suggested that it was dust accumulating on some switch.  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Von,
The problem may not be with the volume control, but rather with the amp modules that are mounted at each speaker location. A very common problem with these amp modules is that small capacitors on the circuit boards will fail and they will cause all kinds of strange noises to be heard in the speakers. Moving the volume control may have only increased or decreased the volume to the amp modules with altered the noise levels. Your only recourse is to replace the amp modules at a cost of about $85 each. I have rebuilt these modules for friends, but this takes some time to do so and I find it faster and less costly to replace them with new amp modules.
