I have a 88 250 pu, and the radio stopped working the light would not come on and could not change channels, but could hear staic and stations drifing in and out.  I just figgured the radio had given out, so purchased a good used one on ebay and with a tape player.

Ok when put in the same thing happened cannot get the radio to change station as it has no
knob to turn, just scan or find buttons, and they do not work, the tape player works great. Stations tend to drift in and out, if I could
find a way to tune in a station would not have any problems.

I know more then likey the problem is a wire, but when pulled the radio out I checked all the wires and they appear to be fine and was unable to trace very far back under the dash as they just go up to an unreachable place.

You have any suggestions, and is their any way to tune in channels other then pushing on scan or search buttons.

Answer -
Jerry,
The stereo in the 88 p/u needs a #33 mini wedge lamp to back light the display. If you give me the complete model numbers off the stereos I can give you a better idea of what the problem could be due to.

Ok but are you saying because the light is burned out that
this stops me from changing stations?  the scan and find
buttons do not work. along with light.

Answer
Jerry,
The back light may have burned out due to some kind of a surge. A surge could have damaged the power supply which effects the front panel operation. In many of these older Ford stereos I find that the front panel assembly with the button/contact units will fail themselves and some button functions will not work.
