Audio Systems: Video cables, component video cables, monster cables

Question
Are there differences in component video cables?everyone raves about the difference in picture quality from the regular composite video to component but considering I bought my DVD player used for $26 ,a Toshiba .I am reluctant to buy those $40 Monster Cables so I am looking on Ebay where people are selling RCA brand 6'w/gold plated connectors for $8.Is that satisfactory?

Answer
Dear Peter,

There are differences in the types of video cables, but among the different types, there are few if any appreciable differences among manufacturers.

Right now there are three predominant video cables: composite, S-video, and component.

Composite is a single RCA jack, generally color coded yellow.

S-video is a multipronged balanced plug.

Component video is three RCA jacks, generally color coded red, green, and blue.

Each gives you a progressively better picture resolution. Only component video can deliver High Definition (HDTV) signals.

The differences among, say, Monster Cable, Audio Quest, and Radio Shack for any of these is minimal. Save your money and get the least expensive cables you can.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
