Audio Systems: Speakers, dispersion pattern, tower speakers

Question
I have 2 tower speakers, Technics SB-A27 which I have had since 1997 and are my favorite pair. Recently I moved and I see a damage in one of the speakers. The center cone of one of the Midranges has a slight dent in it, and I would like to fix it. I tried to unscrew that speaker from the tower so I could push the dent out from the inside, but this was not possible as it was one piece / glued. Is there a way I could get rid of the dent by using some technique or suction ?!? Please advice.

Answer
Dear Nash,

I generally do not recommend that users try to "undent" dented cones. They are made of very thin material, and there's a good chance that you could damage it beyond repair. I suggest that you take the speaker--not just the driver unit--into a qualified repair service and let them do the job.

That having been said, how bad is the sound from the speaker? If you can't tell any difference between its performance now and before, you might leave it well enough alone. However, the dent does cause a change in the cone's dispersion pattern, so the decision whether or not to repair, IMHO, depends on the sound. If the change is material to your ears, you should probably have it serviced.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
