Audio Systems: VW Monsoon system...No sound, amp fuse, external amplifier

Question
Tom,
I'm sorry. I thought I mentioned that I had a 2000 Passat. There is an external amplifier in the trunk and I think that it may be the cause. I checked all of my fuses last night and they're all fine. If it the amplifier, is it easy and inexpensive to get a replacement? Can you recommend and aftermarket amp that would be easy to install and if so, where could I find an adaptor or wiring kit? The plugs, I assume are proprietary to VW products.

Thank you,

Morgan

I was listening to my stereo yesterday, the volume was about mid way or less, when I heard the sound cut out. I was listening to a talk show on AM, so my first thought was that the callers cell phone cut out. The sound cut out for about one second came back for about two seconds and then went out completely; I checked other stations, tried my CD changer and tape deck to no success. The display works just fine, so I pulled the stereo out of the dash and checked the 10 amp fuse, it was fine and then I removed and replaced the connections, still no sound. What could be causing this to happen?
Answer -
Morgan,
Please give me the year of your VW and the complete model number of the stereo in your vehicle. Without the year and stereo model I can't tell you if your stereo has an external amp or not!

Answer
Morgan,
It may be less expensive to have the amp repaired than replace it with a new amp. An aftermarket amp may work, however you may have a hard time finding the adapter connectors. The power amp in the trunk will have two 12 power feeds to it, one hot at all times and one switched 12 volts with the key on. Use a test lamp and check to be sure that you have both 12 supply lines to the amp.
