Nissan Repair: 1988 300Z:Check Engine Light & Poor Emissions, oxigen sensor, emissions test

Question
Hi, I have replaced the fuel pressure requlator and the PCV. The fuel filter was changed by the prior owner. I was going to clean the throttle body but when I read the instructions on the cleaner it said it should not be used with turbocharge. Is there another cleaner for the T body. As far as the injectors go, they are all going to be replaced do to the recall. I found out it was never done. When will that be is another question. Is there anything else you would recommend I do in the mean time for the emissions.

As far as the check engine light, the computer indicated that it was a code 23 (Idle switch). My reaserch concluded the Throttle valve sensor is the same thing, so I replaced it.

First let me say you are awsome!

Car: Manual Transmission-Turbo-Digital Display-Check engine Light and Emissions issues:

1. My check engine light is on about 97% of the time, going out occassionally when I past 40 and 60 mph. It started around late April. The car is running good - besides a small jerk, like a vacuum leak, during idle. Changed the Oxigen Sensor around late March, because it did not pass MD emissions. Point being that the check engine light came on about a month after the Sensor was installed. The car seemed to idle great after the install, no emissions seems to be worse. Any ideas why it's on?

2. Jan 06 - 1st Emissions test: It passed HC(1.3 GPM) and CO(8.4), but failed N0x(4.7); So, changed Oxigen sensor in late March.
May 06 - 2nd Emissions test: It failed HC(2.2), passed CO(11.7), and failed NOx(4.1). Noticed a lose hose near canister - I assume it goes there (attached it), but not sure if it was disconnected the whole time or became disconnected when I changed the Oxigen Sensor.

Well, I just feel everything is wearing out at once, and trying to narrow down the problem with this Haynes manual are causing my me to expand my troubled parts ideas. What do you suggest I check change with regards to the Check Enging Light and to pass Emissions. Please help!

Ken,

You need to read the code to find out what is setting it.  Follow the procedures in the Haynes for an 88 model.  Next, I would think the throttle body needs cleaning and the fuel pressure regulator needs to be checked along with changing the fuel filter.  You might just ahve a stuck injector or two.  Check these things out and email me back with the results.

Answer
Ken,

If the car is failing smog then you probably have leaky turbos also.  I would change the oil to Mobil 1 synthetic 5W30 and fill up with premium gas and add STP injector cleaner or whatever brand you prefer.  They all contain mostly the same ingredients.  Then, run the car on the highway for fifteen minutes and then roll in for a smog inspection.  I bet the car has dirty converters due to the turbo seals leaking and a good run on the freeway will help burn off the residue.  Now, you will still need to figure out what is causing the light and if it is still the oxygen sensor check to see that it is connected correctly and not damaged.  It is probably more like the car is out of range due to the injectors you say need replacing.  But, with a good change of oil and injector cleaner, if the injectors are not too bad, the car should pass.  I would change the fuel filter too just in case since you want to baseline the car and a bad filter will screw up the fuel pressure to the injectors.
