Audio Systems: radio reception, rf interference, chevy suburban

Question
I have a 1999 chevy suburban. The radio gets good reception when the key is in the accessory position. When I turn the key to crank the engine the radio reception goes bad. I get a lot of static. Some FM stations come in pretty good, but the AM stations don't work. The engine doesn't have to be running, the key only has to be in the on position. Thanks

Answer
George,
You may want to contact your local Chevy dealer and ask if any service bulletins have been issued for your vehicle about radio noise. The problem with radio noise may be due to the engine computer sending out RF interference that the radio is picking up. You may also want to try cleaning and tightening the antenna nut/connection on the fender if the antenna is fender mounted.
