I have a ford taurus 96 radio is broke bought what was said to be for a 96 but in reality it was for a 98.  NOw the ford company in 98 went from two harness hookups to one hookup plug.  All the wires are the same i checked all same color coding and all.  So can i splice the 96 harness into the 98 and hook the radio up that way or will that damage something.  Please help

Jessica,

you might try radio shack for a harness to connect the new 98 unit into your 96 plugs .. they should be able to order you one if they dont have one in stock .. this is the best way so you can keep everything neat .. but if for some reason you cant do that .. as long as you follow the color codes and connect everything up properly using good wire nuts/splicers and electric tape you should have no problems .. hope this helps you out if you need anything else let me know

thanks

Answer
Jessica,

i would suggest trying to return the unit to where you purchased it , if you specified you needed it for a 96 and you got a differnt radio than what you needed , it is the companies responsability to replace the unit with the correct one.. now onto trying to cure the problem incase you cant get the proper radio right now.. quadurple check your wiring especially the color codes you should have 2 sets of color charts one for a 96 and one for the 98 so you can crossreference and get the proper connection.. now if you have all of this try hard wiring the unit directly to your battery meaning connect the ground connection to the body via jumper wire , then both the 12v constant wire and 12 volt ignition/accessory wire to the + post on the battery .. the unit should then show signs of power up .. if so .. then its back to your wiring , if not you have another bad unit .. also if you do have 2 or 3 differnt wires for the new unit like 12volt ignition or accessory , or ACC try connecting those wires to the KNOWN turn on wire from your dash connector this goes for the hardwire if unit seems dead , try some of the other "turn-on" wires to check for function.... now if you cant get the unit to work because of unit failure or just problems with the wire up, i would jump back on the wagon for returning the unit for a proper replacement, OEM wiring gets really complicated when you try to mend 2 differnt wire setups together, its something that i hate to do and never recommend anyone ever doing just because its frustrating and usually ends up in a mess of cobbled wires, so if you are already getting to the edge try a local install shop for the task, return unit, or just buy a correct one if the previous seller/company wont accept the return... hope this helps you out , i know i cant do very much through a computer but if you need anything else just let me know and i will try my best

thanks
