Audio Systems: my sony amplifier, sony amplifier, receiver amplifier

My sister gave me, her sony amp for a home theatre i hooked it up tp my tv and my dvd player. but as soon as i get it playing it stops and says protector on the amp. no volume comes from the speakers and the word protector flashes on the amp. thanks alot for you time, if you can give me some tips to fix this then i would be really great thanks again.

Dear Matt,

The protection circuits generally kick in due to a speaker overload; i.e., the speakers are too much for the receiver/amplifier to handle. But rather than guess, I'd like to know (1) what is the model number of your Sony amplifier, and (2) what kind(s) of speakers are you using?
