Audio Systems: stereo, jl speakers, channel amp

Question
I have a mazda protege sedan. I wanted to put some woofers in the trunk. I already have upgrade speaker and aftermarket deck with 3 preouts. What you recommend two 10's and what kind of amp.  I want good bass, but nothing that will rattle parts off my car.

Answer
Jon,
I can recommend two 10"s and an amp, but it's all based on how much you want to spend. The best 'bang for the buck' speakers are Kicker. They're inexpensive, but sold everywhere and have always sounded pretty good to me. Two Kicker 10"s (Solo Barics L5 or L7, or CompVR's) would sound good when paired with a 400 or 500 watt 2 channel amp. JL Audio makes some of the best subs around and two of their 10" W0's with a 250 watt amp would sound awesome. I have a friend who has two 10" W0's that he's been using for more than 5.5 years and they still sound good. However, JL speakers are more expensive than Kicker (and most other brands now that I think about it). No matter what brand of 10"s you use, something will rattle in/on your car. But after you've had your system in for a few weeks, listen and try to find things that rattle both in the car and outside the car. Then go back to the shop, have them find the exact part that rattles and have them tighen it down (whatever it might be).

As for amplifier brands, just about any amp will do (but don't use Sony gear - yuck). The most important part about chosing an amp is making sure that the amp's power output per channel matches the RMS rating on the subwoofers. So a 250 watt 2 channel amp would work great with two 10" W0's, whose power rating is 125 watts. As such, it's difficult to recommend a specific brand since it's the RMS power rating on the subs that will determine what amp you buy. You can stick with the same brand amp as you do subs, but it's definately not required or necessary. I hope this helps.

Best Of Luck,
Alan
