Audi Repair: Audi A4 CVT (2002), audi a4 cvt, ribbon cable

Question
Jan,

Almost every time I shift into D (from P, N or R) the transmission takes a long time to respond, frequently slamming into gear. Once the car is moving everything works OK. Reverse has no problems.

Took the car to a repair shop and they found DTC codes 18185 and 18265.

Do you think the TCM or the ECU could be the culprits?

Answer
It could be the TCM, but more likely an issue with transmission hydraulic pressure or first gear selector.  From the codes there seems to be an issue with a selector solenoid, and some of the wiring to it.  There is a ribbon cable inside the transmission which is notorious for failing.  Some shops say the solenoids can only be replaced all at once, but it is possible to just replace the one that is bad; just make sure they know which one.  I would not take it to a transmission specialist since there are too many dishonest ones out there who will ALWAYS try to sell you an overhaul, but instead go to an import specialist or good local garage to get the initial checks done.  If you know of a trustworthy transmission person, they can obviously do the job.  I would not drive for an extended time with this problem; you are likely to do more damage.  Let me know what you find,  Jan
