Audi Repair: 2002 A6 2.7T or 4.2?, timing belts, milege

Question
Hi Jan

I am planning to buy a 2002 or 2003 Audi A6. I have test driven a few 2.7T and 4.2, and I loved them both. Now, when it comes to reliability, I hear many many different stories. Given the fact that I am buying this car not mainly for commuting, but for having fun (I take a metro or ride my motorcycle to work), I don't mind paying a little extra for gas and go with 4.2. My only concern is the possible unexpected expenses. Which one of them would you suggest. Also, what is the recommended mileage for the timing belt on each of this guys, is the any year limit regardless of the milege?

Thank you very much
Mohsen

Answer
Timing belts should be done at around 80k no matter which engine you go for.  I bought an S4, for fun and winter driving.  Love the twin turbo 2.7motor, so I am biased.  With reference to reliability, if you look after the car, do the oil changes and maintenance on time they should both give you good reliability.  Make sure you get a car with full service history.  Cheers,  Jan
