Audi Repair: Audi A6 - light problem, fuse panel, connection failure

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have a 1995 Audi A6. The front right parking light and rear right tail light don't come on (the left sides work fine). I have checked lamps with a ohm meter and they test ok. I have checked the right hand tail lamp fuse in the fuse panel (drivers side dash) and it's okay. I'm now stumped. Any ideas? Thanks

ANSWER: How do you switch the parking lights on, with the turn signal lever?  Tried the other direction? Do the lights work when switch on normally?  Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: Hi Jan,
There is another lever next to the turn signal lever. It's a three position switch; off, then parking lights, next position is headlights. Headlights high and low beam is operated by pulling the turn indicator lever. Now, whilst checking the details for this reply, the symptoms have changed. When I put the 3 position headlight lever into the parking light position, everything is okay. When I put the lever into the headlight position, the rear right tail light and the from parking light go out. Right side okay.

Answer
Bad lights do not typically heal magically, so I would start to suspect the light switch, or the connections to it.  If you take the steering wheel off, you can remove the complete switch unit, and this can be seperated from the wiper control part.  Make sure that you tighten the connections between the two halves, I see a number of turn signal problems come from the connection failure between the two halves, perhaps we can add parking light problems to the list?  You can also take the switch itself apart, but beware of small spring-loaded small metal components when you open it up...  May want to have a spare handy just in case.  Let me know what you find,  Jan
