Audi Repair: 2002 Audi A6 4.2 Timing Belt Replacement, ebay motors, timing belt replacement

Question
Jan,I bought a 2002 Audi A6 on Ebay Motors with 122k on it. It now has 148k on it and when I take it to the dealer for service he keeps telling me that the timing belt is a time bomb. He wants to replace it and surrounding parts for about $1,800.00 to $2,000.00. I could really use an opinion from you. Do the V8's snap the belts also? I did not see anything in past posts about this. Thanks so very much, Greg

Answer
Unless you have a documented belt change in the car's history, I am afraid that the dealer is right; it is a time bomb.  IF it breaks, you will be facing a repair bill many times $2000...  However there are import specialists who can change that belt cheaper, but it pays to go to someone who has experience with doing them.  The belt is only about $35, the waterpump (might as well do it while you're there) is around $100 and the idlers and tensioners (might as well do those) probably another $100 or so.  Rest, unfortunately, is labor.  This is a BIG job.  You saved money buying the car on ebay; unless you can verify a prior belt change at 100k or so (which is when it should have been done), it is not worth pushing the boat out too far here.  No dealer wil look at a belt and guarantee it for any length of time.  Let me know,  Jan
