Audi Repair: Audi 1993 2.8E Coupe Electrical System., blown fuse, audi 1993

Question
QUESTION: Hi, a few problems...
First is the instrument cluster lights. I noticed the other night that they just switched off. After checking the fuse box, I found that one of the fuses had blown and so I repaired it. The light was working again but only for a short time and then it turned off again. Again a blown fuse. I don't know what happened or what I did to bring on this problem.

The next is my right indicator. Before braking the indicator blinks at a "normal" rate. After applying the brakes they blink double time. If the headlights are on, they blink faster than normal but not quite double time. I've inspected the bulb fittings and the fuse box and can't seem to get my finger around the problem. I noticed some rust on the Tail Light panel (which contains the bulbs in an array) but didn't go further with regard to checking the wiring.

Can you help me with this???

ANSWER: Check the description of the fuse that blows, and look for a short in that circuit.  Form the sounds of it there may be a wiring fault in the hinge area of the tailgate; check for broken wires there first. Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: Sorry, one more thing, How do I know if there is a short??? Do I need special equipment????

Answer
You can check for shorts by using an Ohn meter.  Usually the problem occurs in areas where wires get betn frequently, like in door jambs and at tailgate hinges.  Also any corrosion problems can manifest themselves in the problems you are seeing.  Let me know,  Jan
