Question
I HAVE AN AUDI A4 1.8 T SE 2001 MODEL.IT HAS 98000 MILES ON IT AND HAS FULL AUDI SERVICE HISTORY.APPRROXIMATELY 4 WEEKS AGO THE OIL WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE ENGINE STARTED TO SOUND VERY NOISEY A BIT LIKE A DIESEL.I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A COUPLE OF MECHANICS THAT THE OIL PRESSURE HAS DROPPED BUT THEY DO NOT THINK THAT THIS HAS AFFECTED THE BIG END BEARINGS.DO YOU IN YOUR OPINION THINK THE OIL PUMP HAS FAILEDAND WHAT OTHER DAMAGE COULD BE CAUSED.THERE IS AN ENGINE SYMBOL THAT IS DISPLAYED NOW.THE CAR STILL RUNS.PLEASE HELP AS IT WILL COST £4500 FOR A REPLACEMENT ENGINE FROM AUDI.

Answer
Hi

Sorry, I live in US but we have the same problem here, the difrence is Audi of America covers all 1.8T engines with oil press. problem (only if all services were done in time).  You will kill your engine soon if you still driving the car.
In USA we check CAM bearings, if any of them (one or more) is bad , Audi replace engine and turbo + all crank hoses.
If all of them are OK , they only replace oil pump+screen and all engine/crancase breather hoses. Also, only sintetic oil have to be used.
I will go to Audi, show the history of all services, you can also say that, they cover it in USA.
Good luck                        pltech
