Audi Repair: MAF sensor, performance degradation, substantial performance

Question
I own a 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro Sedan, which has about 84000 miles on it. The check engine light is currently on due to a MAF fault. I got it checked thru an Audi dealer. I have known about this fault for about 3-4 months now, but have postponed getting it fixed. I haven't noticed any substantial performance degradation. In your opinion, how long before I most definitely should get it replaced? The parts cost is reasonable, but the labor costs are ridiculous.
Thanks. Kamlesh
