Cadillac Repair: lack of power - 84 Eldorado, State Farm auto theft claim denial, State Farms forensic experts on stolen cars

Question
QUESTION: My 84 Eldorado 4.1 liter has no power.  It starts good and runs good but when going down the road if I continue to press the accelerator it just seems not to take the gas. It also loses a lot of speed going up hills.  As I push the gas pedal down it seems like there is too small of an opening to take more fuel.  It probably is some small issue but it is frustrating me to no end right now.  Thank you very much for your help in this matter.

ANSWER: Hi,

My first thought is a plugged catalytic converter.

QUESTION: Thank you for replying so quickly.  I changed the two exhaust pipes and the "y" pipe yesterday and at that time I looked into the converter and it was clean.  I have put all new fuel lines and filter on just this past week.  I have been checking and was wondering if it would have something to do with the throttle body? Could you tell me if the throttle position switch has anything to do with telling the throttle body how much gas to receive?

Answer
Hello,

Here is the problem trying to find out the answer over the Internet, you will not find an accurate answer.
You are dealing with a general symptom-no power. This could be a throttle body issue, a map or other sensor and just looking through the center of the cat where the pipe runs through does still does not mean the cat is not plugged. This symptom you ate referring to requires on site testing and diagnoses. This issue can even be an ECM issue. In other words, I can tell you different things to check, but you are chasing ghosts and may stick a lot of money in guessing. The computer system in your car was replaced in 1994, so you are dealing with an old system, that even when I worked on these new ere difficult to diagnose and I was physically working on the car.
I would tell you to try to locate a factory service manual on Ebay, which will assist you or your mechanic in the diagnose. Having the factory manual will assist you in other issues down the line.
I am just being honest. I don't want to guess this to death costing you lots of money and no repair.
