Cadillac Repair: Computer Reprogramming, cadillac sts, replacing an alternator

Question
I recently had my alternator replaced on my 2001 Cadillac STS...after it was replaced the mechanic called and told me they cant start the car and he "forgot" to tell me that after replacing an alternator it is standard to reprogram the computer system or it wont start etc...

The car had no issues before, I feel like they screwed something up and are trying to have me foot the bill (a few hundred bucks).  Is it standard to have to reprogram the computer system  after an alternator replacement?

Thanks

Answer
Hi

I am glad he isn't my mechanic. What a goof!

Only three things I can tell you. If it is an alarm issue, lock the doors with the inside door button. Unlock driver's door with key.

If transponder problem try the 30 min reprogramming.  Key in ignition in on position 10 min. Turn off and turn on for 10 min. Turn off and turn on for 10 more min. If that does not work a tech 2 scanner is needed to reprogram. Call around. Mostmajor service centers have this equipment. Don't go to a dealer and get ripped off more, besides, you might even find a competent tech.

Good luck
