Cadillac Repair: 79 CADILLAC SEDAN DEVILLE, cadillac sedan deville, gear shift

Question
I have some bearings (left rear driver) that went out. Many people have told us to get the straight puller to pull the old ones out and it's simple. All in all, it wasn't. In the center, maybe a hub or something there is the gear shift wheel, inside there is a large pin holding the axle in. The screw/ bolt holding the pin in broke off, how do we get that out?

After that, that's when we use the axle puller right? Then replace the new bearings. Is there a special way we must put the new ones in? Also, how do we refill the gear shift oil and what kind of oil is it that we get? Where does the new oil go?

Thanks for you help,

Kay.

Answer
You can try and drill out the broken pin but it is a 50/50 shot .

One the broken pin is removed slowly remove the large center pin and simply pull the axle out by hand and then reinsert the large pin so the small gears don't fall out.

Pull the bearing with a puller and install a new one, slide the axle back in almost all the way and remove the large pin to get the axle ALL the way back in.
