Cadillac Repair: 1987 Cadillac Deville Air Conditioner, a/c compressor

Question
Our air conditioner compressor just burned up.  We want to get it repaired but are not sure how much it will cost.  Is the car still drivable?  Since this is an older Cadillac, will we be able to get it repaired?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Kathleen,

Getting parts for your car shouldn't be a problem because they are a common design. However cost wise it could run between 1000-1500 dollars depending upon where you go to have it done. I would definitely call around several shops to get quotes after you have the first shop do a hands on inspection and what it will take to repair it.

As far as driveling, if you run the engine on econ and don't hear the belt squealing...provided it is still on...or alot of noise coming from the compressor area then you can still drive it. Since I don't know your definition of burned up what can happen is internally of the compressor it locks up and if the clutch on the front of the compressor can still work if you turn the dash to econ the compressor will just sit there and be ok. But if you hit a/c when the clutch engages on a locked up compressor the belt will make a loud squeal noise. If the clutch bearing is the problem it will make alot to noise and the car can still be driven but not for very long. If that is what happened then the clutch and bearing can be replaced. But if that is the original compressor it would be best to have a new or rebuilt one installed because internally the compressor could be worn out.

Hope that helps answer your question. Bill
