Cadillac Repair: Cadillac Catera, head bolt torque, camshaft bolt torque

Question
I have a 1998 Cadillac Catera and I am having head gaskets put on. What i need to know is where does the cam bearing torque and where does the head torque? could you help me please

Answer
Hi mchyle,

Hopefully you have a book that shows the order that the bolts get tightened because I have no way to send pictures. Also I would suggest that if you don't have a good manual that you go to the alldata.com website and subscribe to the manual for your 1998 Catera and then you can have all the specs you need at your computor.

That said the torque spec for the camshaft bearing bolt cap is 8 Nm or 71 Lbin. They want you to start with the center cap first and work your way out. The head bolt torque is 18 Lbft + 90 degrees + 90 degrees + 90 degrees + 15 degrees. So useing new head bolts torque them all in order to 18 Lbft. Then turn all the bolts 90 degrees in order. Do that 3 times total. The last time you need to turn the bolt 15 degrees.

Hope that answers your question. Bill
