Cadillac Repair: try to start horn beeps, gm dealer, aftermarket components

Question
Hello, I have a 91 deville that was given to me.  The car had no keys and an aftermarket bulldog alarm.  The key fob was also lost.  I removed the aftermarket alarm system and installed a resistor to bypass the vats because the car would not start.  The car ran for a little while, I then moved the car the next day, shut it off, and when trying to start the car again, the only thing that happens is the doors lock and the horn beeps when the key is in the start position. I tried another resistor and it did not work, so I guess my question is whether or not this is a gm problem or something I missed when removing the aftermarket alarm?  I can not find any other aftermarket components on the car.

Answer
Hi Mark,

The easiest thing would be if you got this car from a family member then they could show ownership at a GM dealer and have a key made with the correct pellet.

Since you rechecked your work you would have noticed if a wire or the resistor came apart.

Not quite sure how you determined what resistor you needed but usually it needs to be with-in 500 ohms of the factor key. If not then the car won't start.

Did you try to start the engine in neutral? What I do is put my foot on the brake and hold the key in the start position and move the shifter slowly from P to OD.

Behind the glovebox there is a starter enable relay. Because of the age of the car it might need to be replaced because the contacts are bad.

Thats the best I can do from here because I have no way of testing things myself. Bill
