Nissan Repair: Power Loss and Engine Sputtering, 1990 nissan axxess, fuel pump filter

Question
Hello,
I recently purchased a 1990 Nissan Axxess from a friend. It ran fine for the first few days with the exception that it shook and vibrated in idle. Yesterday it started fine, but after only a few minutes, it had significant power loss and the shaking and sputtering became constant, with brief moments of running smoothly. Is this an ignition issue? A fuel pump/filter issue? I'd like to fix it my self if I'm able.
Thank for your time.

Answer
Hi Ryan -

First of all, remove the spark plugs and inspect each, one by one. If any of them are fouled, black, or wet, then it is the plugs or wires. Check the compression as well, while you got the plugs out. This is very important, as it will give you an indication of what is going on in your car.

Why was the car sold?

If compression and plugs are all fine, then you would explore the possibility of the fuel pump, which is located in your fuel tank. You need to check pressure and volume.

Please start by checking compression and plugs, and get back to me -
