Cadillac Repair: hard start, stalling, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump relay

Question
QUESTION: 1992 Seville 4.9 thinking I have a faulty fuel pressure regulator valve, I pulled the vacuum line to the valve and checked for fuel coming out of the valve with key on engine of. Noticed none, however vacuum lined smelled of fuel. Just for kicks withe the vacuum line totally disconnected I started the engine noticing it started easier and would idle without stalling. Is this normally? or an indication that the valve is bad? any help would be great thanks

ANSWER: What made you suspect that the fuel pressure regulator valve is faulty ?.

Is or HAS the CHECK ENGINE light ever illuminated on the dash ?.

QUESTION: Its my moms car and I don't know that much about Cadillacs. I did a little snooping on the internet and found simil;ar condition and the fuel pressure reg. was suspect. the only time i noticed the light coming on is when it stalls. tried pulling codes but not sure I did that correctly. I found no codes stored. when it stalls it just  cuts off no stumble or hesitation. could it be the fuel pump? and what is the fuel pressure specs range? also where on the fuel rail might i found the port to connect gauge? thanks

Answer
When the vehicle stalls out, If you have to wait an hour or so for it to restart try this test on the fuel pump.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump..
