Cadillac Repair: repair my car, eldorado 8, neutral safety switch

Question
I have a 92 cadillac Eldorado 8 celinder and when I drive it a little and  try to start it up again, sometimes it wont start. I will turn the key and it will not say anything.  But after a while it may start then.  When you turn the key it starts after a second, but not instant.  The only thing show up sometime is the Battery volt 12.1, can you please help me.

Answer
Hi Adrian,

Then are several possibilities that could be causing your no-start. But without further testing it might be tough to tell for sure.

If the problem were with the VATS/key pellet usually it will flash a security message or a wait 4 minuets to start. None of that happened but you might try the other key when it does and see if the engine will start.

If it were a spark issue then the module inside the distributor would be a likely suspect. But the starter would turn at normal speed but the engine just wouldn't start.

If it were a fuel problem, which doesn't seem likely, the engine would turn over at normal speed and maybe sputter but not start. However it is unlikely that the fuel pump would work intermittently...it usually works or it doesn't.

Another possability would be an out of adjustment neutral safety switch. You could try starting the engine in neutral but usually heat doesn't affect that switch.

The starter and solenoid are the likely suspects. When the solenoid heats up it sometimes won't even click so no sound would be heard when turning the key. Inside the starter the armature might have a shorted winding or worn brushes. After it has heated up it when they tend to act up. So after they cool down they might start to work again for awhile until one of them heats up cools down too many times and just fails to work anymore.

So if your starter is more than 5 years old and over 70,000 miles then I would feel confident that replacing the starter with solenoid will fix your no-start. Bill
