Cadillac Repair: Steering Noise, power steering fluid, cadillac deville

Question
I have a 1998 Cadillac Deville Concourse when driving or when parked when the steering wheel is turned either way there is a groaning sound - power steering fluid is at the appropriate level.  Any suggestions as to where to start looking for the problem.

Answer
Hi Bob,

If the noise goes away when the temperature warms up they make a cold climate power steering fluid that can be used after the original fluid or as much as can be removed by takeing a line loose from the gear. Another way would be to remove the return hose from the pump and useing an adapter to a longer hose place it in a pail or suitable container. Plug up the return hose fitting on the pump and with the engine running add at least 32oz of the cold climate fluid and then shut the engine off, reconnect the line to the pump and see if the noise has gone away. You probably would want a helper to start and stop the engine because the pump can move alot of fluid in a short time.

If the car was recently worked on maybe a p/s hose or a/c line is touching the body and transmitting the noise that way.

There is a possability that the pump has air in it due to a small leak somewhere. If the pump is noisy sometimes adding Lucus p/s additive can make the noise go away.

Give those a try and let me know if you need more help. Bill
