It sounds like when there is a load on the engine its receiving insufficient fuel, is the a/c off when this happens. Some things you can try are running lucas injector cleaner through, check your air filter and make sure its clean, this wouldnt cause the problem but it may increase it. Check the connections at the battery, mainly the ground, and alternator. Next replace your fuel filter, Im not exactly sure of the location on your car, but look at the undercarriage, http://198.208.187.182/internet/PartImage.jsp?mfgname=ACDELCO&prodlinecd=47&acpa that is a picture of the fuel filter, you need a special took for the clamp on one end. A repair shop can do this job in about 30 minutes but its very easy to do yourself. Then run more injector cleaner through. If you still have the problem, you may have a faulty injector.

As long as the engines starting up the the ignition coils  are suffiecient enough that the engine runs, but these cars have coil packs, one may be broken. But pull a spark plug out[preferably an older one] and take a picture of it, send it me via email djtrigger90@yahoo.com and i will probably be able to pinpoint your problem.

Its also a good idea to replace all the plugs, remove the coil pack, i think the s.plugs are 5/8" size, you need a special spark plug socket so you can remove the plug from the cylinder. Then all you do is take the new plug out of the box, gap it with a $1 gapper, unless you get iridium which doesnt need to be gapped, but which does cost $10 a  plug vs. $2 a plug delco, i use delco but ngk are also good. Apply thread anti-lock $.99 packet. And tighten the plug, dont strip the threads.

No the knock sensor and harmonic balancer[if you have a balancer] only smoothes the engine out, I would replace your fuel filter and spark plugs and run some injector cleaner before and after you do this. Delco plugs are reccomended, make sure you gap them correctly, if the problem is still there you may have an injector problem or a coil pack problem.

Answer
The coil pack runs about $200 each, and you need two of them...A shop may be your best bet since they get parts near wholesale. But a tune up at 100,000 miles should be done. What i think happened in your wifes car is the crank position sensor wasnt getting a signal from the teeth on the crank, so the ignition timing or spark wasnt right, when she went uphill the engine would be put under more stress and the ECM wouldnt correct the spark timing and fuel being sent.
