Cadillac Repair: Automotive A/C, r 134 freon, r 134 refrigerant

Question
No sir I did not.  I can see you shaking your head now.  If I am not to late, can I have this pumped down, and refilled with R134A ?  There actually was a slight bit of R12 in the system when I first checked to see if there was any pressure in the system.  The system has never been opened.

My daughter's 1990 4 cyl. Honda Accord's A/C is not working.  We did not want to put much money into fixing so I bought a retro fit kit for R134A at the local auto parts store thinking low on freon.  I checked before hand for freon and no there was nothing that came out.  I put the new fittings on and followed the instructions.  The clutch engaged when the first 12 oz. went in.  The kit came with a gage.  I put in 3 twelve oz. cans that came with the kit and it was still low (around 15 on the gage - low side) so I went and bought 2 more cans of freon.  As I was putting in the 5th can the clutch stopped and cycled about every 30 seconds for only about 2 or 3 seconds still showing low freon.  The gage shoots up on the low side when not cycling but the 2 or 3 second cycle brings it down but it still shows low freon, not yet to the normal range.   I do not want to put more money into a car that has 140,000 miles but still runs great, except it has no air conditioning.  What did I do wrong ?  I can almost see you shaking your head on this one - LOL !!  Thanks for any advice you can give.  Also,  how much freon would this normally hold ?  Thanks again.  Mark.

Answer -
Did you evacuate all the air out of the system via a vacuum pump BEFORE you added the freon ?.

Answer
You need to drain out ALL the freon and then evacuate the system via a vacuum pump for atleast an hour and then recharge it.

Did you add the little can of R-134 refrigerant oil to the system ?.

ONLY install 75% of the R-134 freon of the specified amount of R-12 by the manufacturer.
