Cadillac Repair: service ride control, cadillac deville, northstar engine

Question
Hi

I just bought a 1995 Cadillac Deville with 112000 miles on it. I keep getting a service engine soon light and also a service ride cotrol message. I ran the diagnostics and got the following codes in this order. PO48, IO32, IO39. What do these mean and how do I fix the problem.

Thanks

Gerry

Answer
Hi Gerry, In '95 the Deville had 2 engines available and since you didn't say which one you had I can't get too specific for the P048 because the diagnosis is differant.

P048 means that the EGR valve system has a problem. If you have the Northstar engine chances are that the valve can't open all the way and that is why the code is setting. If you have the 4.9L push up on the EGR valve diaphram with the engine running and see if it runs rougher or dies. If it doesn't then you will need to remove the valve and possably the throttlebody to drill out and/or clean the passages.

I032 is a loss of ABS/TCS data and can also set because of the I039 has also set. To diagnose the I032 it is important to know if it is a current or history code.

I039 is a loss of road sensing suspension module data. Again it is important to know if the code is current or history for diagnosis.

For both "I" codes if they are history I would clear the codes and see if they return. There is a chance that some testing was done in the past and the tech forgot to clear the codes after he was done. The other possability is you have 2 computors that are failing intermittantly or there is a wireing problem in the data line for the computors but without a current code setting the codes are pretty meaningless.

Hope that answers your questions and let me know if you need more help. Bill
