Cadillac Repair: steering 2000 escalade, power steering pump, solinoid

Question
I replaced the power steering but when the engine is below 1500 rpm the steering will not work.  Is there something in the computor that controls the power steering?

Answer
Hi Steve, On the newer vehicles they have a solinoid on the back of the power steering pump that controls the assist so at slow speeds there is maximum assist and at speeds above aprox. 30mph the assist is gradually reduced because as the speed of the vehicle increases the effort to steer isn't as great. That way you get a better road feel to your steering. If you didn't change over the solinoid from your old pump to the replacement pump that needs to be done. Also make sure the electrical connector is plugged in.

The other thing that could be a problem is the valve where the power steering line screws in. On the replacement pump it might be calibrated differantly and you would need to remove the fitting and valve from the old pump and install it in the replacement pump and then the steering will be back to normal.

Let me know if you need more help. Bill
