1996 Cadillac Deville - V8 Northstar

Hi, I have a 1996 Deville and the problem is that the emergency brake will not release automatically when I put the car in gear. I can release it manually with the little lever next to the emergency brake. Do you have any idea what the problem might be? Do you know if the release mechanism is mechanical (cable) or electronic? Any info would be helpful because I can't find anything in the Chilton manual concerning this.
