i have a 1991 caddy 4.9 v-8 it started stalling while going down the road after 3 or 4 times it would start back up i replaced the fuel filter and it was pretty dirty ive replaced the ignition control module the white plastic thing with the metal prong under the distributer cap, spark plugs and oil now sometimes it will fire right up but mostly acts like it wants to run but dies as soon as it starts and sometimes burps a strong gas cloud through the throttle body pulled new plugs and they were gas fouled  cleaned them and still like sometimes it has fire and sometimes not when it does start it runs great until i shut it off  please help  i hope i have provided enough info

Answer
Hi,Hope

A few things can cause this but ill got through the most common causes, first is to check the ground wire, this leads from the battery to the ft lower part of the engine block just behind the starter, you'll need to raise the car up a bit to access the undercar, look at the start motor and directly behind it is a stud with a locknut on it,the ground cable attaches to the stud, make sure that is clean and tight, and i mean tight,if the ground is loose it will cause your complaint,if all is good there then either the fuel injector{s} is failing,i have seen the injectors will remain open causing fuel to continue to flood the cylinders causing a flooding condition, the way they can be checked is to either remove the fuel rail lifting up to expose the injectors and turning the ignition on a few times watching for fuel dripping or spraying out,if they do i recommend replacing the injectors.
Another cause and i have seen this many times is a failing ECM[Powertrain computer],causing injector on time to be excessive or ignition failure or drop off, meaning it will tell the ign module to begin spark only to shut it off midpoint.
Or one more,an open or failed coolant temp sender, causing it to fool the computer thinking the coolant is really colder or warmer than it really is,the computer will adjust fuel injector on time or flow rate, thus on a real cold engine the computer will command full fuel rates,if it still thinks the engine is cold, yet it is fully warmed up,it will flood the engine with fuel causing your complaint.let me know what you find, and or need more help in diagnosing. Thanks
