1991 cadillac sedan deville 4.9
About a two weeks ago my cadillac started stalling on me only when i would be slowing down or coming to a stop, sometimes it would also start to surge when i tryed to slow down or stop and most of the time after that it would stall, Now the porblem has gotten worse and it stalls sometimes a soon as i put it in dive and also is harder to start after it has stalled.  The car idles ok and reverses ok.  Also i noticed about a month ago that black smoke was coming out of my exhaust when i rev the car up, I dont know how long it was happining but did notice there was already a black spot on my drive way
Do you know what the problem could be?
Thanks

Could be any number of sensor problems and or emissions related devices. You will have to have your local dealer take a look.

Hi i just ran my computer diagnostic test and its giving me E40, E53, and E91 i figured the E53 is my problem right now which is Distributor signal interrupt. the two others power sterring pressure switch and PRDNL switch problem would cause this right?
Also I wanted to know what would cause a distributor signal interrupt? the fuel filter, PVC Valve, Cap and rotor? are theses all legitamate things that could case this problem and is there anything else?
Thanks

One more question. what are the codes that contain dots? i got a code E.9.6
why are the dots on this but not the other codes?
Thanks again

Answer
I do not have access to a 1991 Caddy service manual in my extensive library in order to provide you with an EXACT diagnosis.

However, The stalling is most likely being caused by a faulty COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR of which may NOT illuminate the CHECK ENGINE light on the dash. You need to manually test this sensor using an OHM METER.

Pull a spark plug and see if it is carbon fouled on the electrode end as this would be a sign of a probable faulty CTS.

The distributor interrupt signal as well as the PRNDL switch can also cause this problem.

The dots inbetween the numbers designate a start of a diagnostic procedure that can be performed using the control panel inside the vehicle.

You really need to obtain a GM service manual in order to perform the diagnostics.

A GENERIC HAYNES or CHILTONS does NOT contain this type of information.
