Chrysler Repair: Inner tie-rod replacement: 95 mini-van, plymouth grand voyager, inner tie rod

Question
I have a 1995 (last of the older style) Plymouth Grand Voyager 3.8 litre. I have to replace the driver's side inner tie rod. I have never done one on a chrysler product before and read that the OE has some sort of lock pin in it and requires a special tool. I also have been told that it is a real hard job that requires taking the entire rack out. I am trying to do all my homework before I dig into it. Can you help?!

Answer
Hi Kurt,
Are you certain that the inner tie rod is replaceable? I have the '95 shop manual and it goes as far as replacing the inner boot but there is nothing specific about removing the inner tie rod and replacing it. I can xerox and postal mail you the 7 pages that show how to remove the steering gear if you would like. Check with a dealer parts counter to see if the inner tie rod is available separately. The only tool mentioned is that to separate the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle, which is probably substituitable with any other similar tool. Tell me a postal mailing address if you want the pages.
