Cadillac Repair: 1995 cadillac transmission problem, solinoids, harness connector

Question
hello,my cadillac is a 1995 concours.the transmission will not shift into o/d.also when i take off from a complete stop i can feel the trans is not in first gear, when applying gas from a complete stop it seems as though the trans is in 2nd or 3rd,then while gas is being applyed it abruptly goes into 1st within a couple of feet from take off.my caddy has 125,000 miles most of which are highway miles.i never abuse the car and these symptoms occurred without warning.theres no slipping from 1st,to 2nd,to third no matter how much gas you give it.i appreciate any helpful suggestions, thanks wayne

Answer
Hi Wayne, Sounds to me like you might need to change one or both shift solinoids inside the transmission. There is a test procedure for that in the Caddy shop manual or maybe other manuals have that info by now. Basically you unplug the the trans wiring harness connector near the trans and useing an ohmeter measure the resistance of both solinoids. If one is getting out of range then that could be causing your shift problems and it would be good to replace them both. You will need a book to know what wires to measure and the procedure on how to change them. It isn't too bad a job if you know some basic testing and repairs. Otherwise you will need to take the car in to a shop for testing. Bill
