Cadillac Repair: cadillac 1987, cadillac 1987, neutral safety switch


Question
i have a 1987 cadillac sevill and one day it will start fine for no meason to wont it'll have pelnty of power but no fire wont do anything but play the radio lights and horn windows the frist time it sat for two days then i went to and hold the key for 5 or 6 sec and it started now it's doing it again and thats not working, please help if you can.

Hi James, Sounds like the pass key system might be giving you problems. Did you try cleaning the ignition key with rubbing alcohol or try the other key to start it? Does it display a wait 2 minuits message on the data panel? If it still is acting up then the wires comming from the ignition lock cylinder could be going open and the choices would be to replace the lock cyl. and keys or install a resister in the wires at the base of the steering column. Other things to check  are the neutral safety switch by holding the key in the start position with your foot on the brake pedal and move the shifter through the gears or place it in neutral. Testing might find a bad starter or starter solinoid. If this is the original one for this car then it could be bad. Hope that helps. Bill
