Chevrolet Repair: 2000 Cavalier randomly turns off/wont start, problem thanks, fuel pump

Question
My Cavalier always turns over, yet sometimes will not start.  Upon turning off the ignittion and turning it back on multiple times it eventually will work.  When it does work, it only turns over a few times before starting.  It also has suddenly died while driving.  It is preceeded by a single click noise and then the engine shuts off.  After pulling over the starting problem may or may not be present.  My mechanic does not know what to do.  Can you diagnose this problem?  Thanks.

Waveform analysis
What needs to be done is a fuel pump waveform analysis to check integrity of commutator and brushes in pump.  This test definitively indicates intermittent fuel pump failures. See attached picture drawn in paint and ask your tech to do one.  If he doesn't know what or how to do it or doesn't have the equipment you need to find another mechanic.
