Chevrolet Repair: Gears, chevrolet blazer s10, chevrolet blazer

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer S10, V6, automatic and it has a floor shift. I recently went to take the Blazer out of park and put it into Reverse. I pushed the brake down to release the button on the gear shifter and the button would not go in. What do you think this could be? Any information you can pass along to me would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

ANSWER: Hey,

Sounds like a problem with the shift interlock solenoid.  It is energized with 12 when you turn the key on and released when a signal from the brake switch is received.

QUESTION: This is the first automatic vehicle I have ever owned, or worked on and I have no idea what an interlock solenoid is, what it does or how much it would cost to replace. Can you give me a little more detail about what it does and where it is located so that I can replace it.

Answer
Hey,

The shift interlock solenoid is designed to prevent the vehicle being put in gear unless the key is on and your foot is on the brake.  When you turn the key on in your blazer 12 is applied to the Shift interlock solenoid (SIS) and a lever comes out to stop you from pulling the shifter.  This solenoid is under the steerin column on a floor shift model, has one green wire and is 148.15.
