Chevrolet Repair: freeze plug on 93 chevy k1500 4x4 4.3l V6 eng, radiator fluid, chevy k1500

Question
Freeze plug on 93 chevy k1500 4x4 4.3l V6 eng-My truck is used very rarely but usually runs pretty good.  Recently I noticed that my heater wasn't working but thought I could get by for the day with out it even though it was a cold day.  Several days later I need the truck again to pick up several long 2x4's I need for a remodel on my sister-in-law's bathroom.  On the way back from the lumber store I noticed that my engine tempature gauge was going up and down from below normal to just below overheated (it did this also when I noticed that the heater wasn't working).  About half way home (5 miles) the gauge topped out and stayed there.  The engine immediately over heated and I stopped on the side of the roadway.  I checked the radiator when i could and added water and radiator fluid (took more than it should have).  I made it home and when I checked the truck later I found a puddle of radiator fluid under my engine.  I replaced the thermstat and tried to put fluid into the radiator but noticed that it ran out almost as quickly as I put it in.  The stream of fluid appears to be coming from the lower right side of the motor (just behing the starter) but I can't see much without removing the starter.  all the hoses appear to be intact and don't sppear to be leaking.  I am having no luck finding where the freeze plugs are on this engine and am hopeing that one is just behind the starter on the engine block.  If not guess I cracked the block.  Can you tell me if a freeze plug is located where I think it is and if you think that my problem is just a leaking freeze plug.  It has been unusually cold in NEW Mexico this year and am hopeing that its just a freeze plug.  Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.   THANKS  If I don't have to remove the starter to get to the freeze plug please tell me.

Answer
Hey,

Yes there is a frost plug right behind the starter on a 4.3 and I usually put a block heater in that hole if it is hard to access.  Make sure it isn't running down the back of the bellhousing from the intake gasket leaking though.  This would be just as common.
