Chevrolet Repair: 1997 Chevy Tahoe gas smell coming from exhaust., air fuel mixture, chevy tahoe

I have a 1997 Tahoe. The engine light is on and the exhaust blows out a lot of smoke. It smells very strong like gas. I was told there was something wrong w the muffler so I took it and they told me there was blue on the Catalytic Converter and it may need a tune up. Another mechanic told me he has never heard of this. I'm planning on taking it in but I wanted to know what could possibly be the issue so I can ask around and get the best cost.

Hey,

  Have you had it scanned for codes and what are they?  If the smoke is very black and thick its because of a densified air fuel mixture and excessive carbon.  I wouldnt be surprised if its an EGR code.  A stuck or defective EGR will make lots of black smoke and smell like its over fueled.
