Chevrolet Repair: 98 S-10 4 cyl manual with 80k, fuel pressure gauge, egr valve

Question
Hi, my truck began missing, running badly, like I got a tank of bad gas.  I ran the gas down, went to the new station and filled up,  changed the fuel filter, but the problem didn't go away it got worse.  It began losing power, acting like the motor was either getting way too much or not enough fuel,  playing with the gas pedal while trying to get it off the freeway couldn't find any spot or gear that would help it.  Coasted off the freeway,  towed it home.
Fuel pressure gauge says fuel pump is working, changed plugs and air filter, (plugs had a lot of carbon on them), checked fuses, etc.
I finally got all the gas out of it in case I do have to drop the gas tank,  but I don't want to do that if not necessary.  From reading all these other posts,  I know that's how to access the fuel pump and relay.
OH, the truck will start...sort of.  As long as I didn't touch the gas pedal,  just let it start,  but it won't run.  If I try to give it gas,  it stalls,  or dies, or lurches then dies.  No power...acts like I'm trying to take off in third gear instead of first.
Do you have any hint of what I may check next?
I am not a mechanic,  but I have my late husbands tools and enough patience to try to figure this out.
Thanks for any assistance.

Answer
sorry about your loss of your husband :-(

I really suspect the EGR has gotten a chunk of carbon build up in it.  If that happens, it cannot operate properly and all these symptoms will happen.  Usually happens on 6 cyl.

Remove the egr valve and look to see if you see a black rock stuck in the piston.  If so, dislodge this and reinstall the EGR.

Was any of your plugs wet?  If so, could indicate a leaky injector.  This would not cause so severe of symptoms.  I doubt timing belt or chain.  I really would start with the EGR

I was thinking of another cause of this could be plugged exhaust.  If the Catalytic converter plugged up or the exhaust got pinched somehow.
