Question
hey, i have a 1987 camaro with a 5.7    i have wide tires on the back and airshocks...it wasnt like this  until today..but i noticed that the drivers side wheel is sticking out 1 1/4 further than the passenger side...whats going on and how do i fix it? thankyou so much! oh yea...being that you are a certified mechanic...do you happen to know if it is illegal to run the exhaust out the side of the car right before the rear tires?

Answer
Hi RickI,

Last question first.  The exhaust can stick out anywhere.  Depending on the state you live in, you may need the CAT.  Otherwise, I usually pull off and replace from the Manifold back.  If I have stainless, I will leave it.

The problem with running the exhaust in front of the tires, is the heat can warp and discolor the aluminum rims, if you have those.  Side pipes run out before the rear tire.  Another problem with exhaust upgrades is finding a shop who will install, if you can't.

Now the first question.  Sounds like your axle may be comming apart.  The axle shaft may be sliding out.  Do you notice any loose feelings, or does the ride feel louder or like it is hitting harder.  Inside the 'PIG', you have a pin, then 'C' clips that hold the axle shafts in place.  You may lost a 'C' clip.  Or possibly the axle is comming apart in the 'PIG'.

You need to raise the car in the rear.  Pull on the tire like you are removing it, only leave the bolts tight.  If is comes out, you need to open the rear axle cover and see what is up.

Hope this helps.
