Hi I was wondering if you knew anything about transmissions . I was driving home on the freeway one day when my speedometer went crazy.I pulled off and heard a rattling noise I stopped on the side of the road and that's the last time it moved. I put the car in gear and the speedometer immediatly starts to move but the car does not.I put the car in park and I hear a rattling noise again but no movement . If you do not know could you refer me 2 someone who would know? Thank You, Don

If that is rear wheel drive, look under there and see if the driveshaft is turning. If so, a broken axle is possible.
If it is front wheel drive, you might have a cv joint out.

Answer
Hi Don,
It might be transmission, but then again, it could be a drive axle not connected to a wheel.
This could happen by the CV joint loosing its balls, or the splines stripping. A shaft could also break. But each of those can be repaired without working on the transmission.
I would have someone start the car, and put it in gear, while holding on the brakes.
Get down in front of it, and look under there at the front drive axles. If one of them is turning, that outer cv joint is not connected, and needs work.

If neither axle shaft is turning, then it could be transmission, or differential problems, or an inner cv joint.

If you are uncertain about getting down in front of it while in gear, have the helper place it in reverse. That way, if it does move, it will be away from you.
