Question -
I have a work truck with man 5 speed.  How do I tell if the 4x4 is manual (force and hope the gears align), or computer assisted and activated after the lever is pushed?

The dealer says it's manual, you can push it into 4x4 at any speed, but have to be fast so the gears don't grind.  This makes no sense to me at all and is different then the told to me by the dealer that sold me the truck.

And also different then it seemd to work when  I first took delivery of the truck.

If it is computer activated and not working, it would explain other problems I am having with the truck.

Answer -
In the transfer case there is a SLIP-CLUTCH that allows you to engage the 4x4 at a particular speed. What does it tell you in the owners manual ?.

What OTHER problems are you having ?.

The OTHER problems are;

The truck surges when cold for one to three blocks and at times launches so violently the only way to control it is to engage the clutch.  It seems to be getting better but it's been going on about 5 months now.  At times dash lights such as speed control have come on during the violent surging; though I have no speed control.

The truck was running fine until one day it desieled when I turned it off, then missed badly at stop light when I got back to town.

No codes have ever been set, GM and the dealers give me the run around.

A dealer cleaned the throttle body and fuel injectors which seemed to help; though a GM tech says the dealer was lying and never cleaned anything, as at 2000 miles it would not need it. The dealer said GM had a service advisory to do it before performing any diagnostic work.

The GM tech expert said it's an intermittent ground problem.  Which seems like BS catch all for they don't know.  I told GM intermittent ground is the definition of a lemon; they say I need to drive more smoothly and not cause ground problems.

Answer
Did you buy this truck BRAND NEW or USED ?. From all the problems it does appear that you do have an electrical GROUND CIRCUIT that is NOT connected and or is loose most likely from previous work that has been performed on the vehicle.

It is NOT impossible to fix this vehicle and I would love to have this truck at my facility here in New Mexico so I could fix your problems.

I do NOT believe in ANY vehicle being labled as a LEMON.

There are only :

unskilled technicians who do not know how to diagnose your problem.

technicians who do not want to make the effort to fix the vehicle.

A manufacturing error when the vehicle was built of which there are TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS put out by the manufacturer addressing known similar problems and there procedure to fix them.

Where is this vehicle located ?. As I purcahse many vehicles when a customer gets totally frustrated with the vehicle and bring it back to my shop on my trailer and fix it here.
