Chevrolet Repair: 99 Chevy venture, baltimore maryland area, crankshaft sensor

Question
I have a 99 Chevy Venture minivan. The Serpentine belt fell off and a mechanic fixed it and said that he also had to replace a pulley. Upon picking it up the check engine light went on and the van did not seem to idle smoothly. When a light turned green, it felt like the van was changing gears breifly until it settled on a gear. I took it back to the shop and they said it is a crank sensor that went bad and the water pump needs to be replaced. Does this diagnosis make sense and how much should it cost in the Baltimore, Maryland area. Thank you in advance  Mayer

Answer
It is very possible that the belt came off due to a faulty bearing in the water pump and that the belt has damaged the crankshaft sensor.

However, I STRONGLY recommend that you get another estimate and ONLY tell the service facility that the belt came off and you had it put back on and let them make the diagnosis.

Water pump approx $85.00
Crank sensor approx $125.00

Labor approx $250-$350
