Chevrolet Repair: 2500 van rear drums., parking brake cable, wheel bearings

Question
Damn drum brakes, the pads seem to have worn a serious groove in the drum and there is no breakout to adjust the pads, the parking brake cable is loose and I cant get the dang things to budge. it is a 6 lug 2500 series. I have never come across this any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Martin,
Yes, I have seen this.
About all you can do is break those little nail looking pins that go through the backing plate and shoes.
You might try tightening the parking brake cable where you can apply it real tight, and then release it a couple times. I have seen the parking brake cable get cought on a rock while four wheeling off road, and jerk it so tight that the lever in the brake shoe mechanism actually cought on the web of the shoe, and kept it applied, even with slack in the cable.
But some serious pulling and prying may be what is needed.

On the 2500 now, is that drum part of the hub? Im thinking that isn't till 3500, but make sure you don't need to remove wheel bearings etc. You know if there are bolts holding the axle shaft to the hub.
Then, if you hate the drum brakes, and have some time to browse, check this link.

I happen to be FixitFox on that forum site.  Look it over...it is free, even if you sign up, and there is a lot of good information on that site.
