Chevrolet Repair: Fuel sender unit, proper fuel, fuel levels

Question
Is a "sender unit" mandatory to insure the proper performance of the fuel pump?  I do not care about accurate read-outs of my fuel levels.  I just want the truck to receive the proper fuel pressure.  I have an 1987 Chevy S-10 pick-up  2.8L V6.
Any advice you can offer will help.
Thank You,
Scott

Answer
Hello Scott,
The sender for the gauge is not necessary.
However, if there is a problem with the sender, like a short, it could possibly have some adverse effect.
A bad ground back near the tank could cause problems with both the sender and the pump.
But, if you can hear the pump running, it is probably ok.
The pressure should be about 13 PSI.
