Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Discovery 1 V8 1995, land rover discovery, car wont start

Question
Hi
I needed to replace the thermostat,i removed the distributor
and alternator to gain access.I marked distribute position before removal.
I fitted the new part and rebuilt, but now the car wont start. It will crank but does not want to fire.I have checked all connectors.Car ran before work so must assume it has to do with the distributer. Is there a set process for fitting it,as maybe the dizzy shaft moved after removal, would this make a difference?
your help would be much appreciated

Answer
What I would do is take off the distributor cap and turn the engine slowly clockwise till the rotor is in line to fire #1.  When you are approaching #1 firing take out the #1 spark plug and stick in a long screwdriver and feel the top of the piston to make sure the piston is at top center when the rotor points at #1 on the cap.  If the piston is at the top and the rotor is not pointed to #1, you have the timing off.  This is a very rough timing of course, but it will tell you if the distributor drive is correctly installed
