Chevrolet Repair: 1988 Astro van V-6 2whell drive, astro van, service engine soon light

Question
My van uses excessive oil, I have replaced the front oil seal but it keeps burning? about 1qrt-1 1/2qrts per week.  On top of that the service engine soon light keeps comming on.  I did a diagnostic with a paperclip but it comes out as if nothing is wrong or as nothing is recorded in the diagnostic swiches.

I love my van and would like to keep it, but am I just hoping and should I just start looking for a newer car?

Please let me know, the help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello maria,
First see if any is just leaking from gaskets.
Then check the PCV valve, or replace it. Only a few dollars.
Make sure the air filter is relatively clean.
If the van puffs out a big cloud of smoke when you start it, the valve guide seals could be dried and cracked. They can be replaced without removing the head in most cases, and is not a terribly expensive repair.

Good luck,
Van
